Jethro's Fraction Scribepost

2. Mike carried out the division 3/4 / 2/3 as follows.

 3     2      4      2
--- / --- = --- x ---
 4     3      3      3

                8
            = ---
                9

Do you agree with Mike’s method and answer? Explain.

No, because he made a reciprocal on the first one. (in our method, the numerator)

5.   a) 5/8 / 1/4          find a common denominator.
          5/8 / 2/8    =  2 1/2

b) 1/4 / 1/3    find a common denominator
  3/12 / 4/12  =  3/4

c) 1 1/2 / 2/3       find a common denominator
     9/6  /  4/6  =  2 1/4

d) 2 1/3 / 5/6      find a common denominator
    14/6 /  5/6   =  2 4/5

7.    a) 3/5 / 9/10 = 6/10 / 9/10     = 2/3
          find the common denominator

            6     10      60     2
           --- x --- =  --- = ---
           10     9       90     3
        -------
            9     10
           --- x --- = 1
           10     9

b) 1 1/2 / 5/6 = 9/6 / 5/6        = 1 4/5
       find the common denominator

            9      6       54         4
           --- x --- =  --- =  1  ---
            6      5       30         5
        -------
            5      6
           --- x --- = 1
            6      5

c) 3 1/3 / 1 5/6 = 20/6 / 11/6      = 1 9/11
         find the common denominator

            20    6      120          9
           --- x --- =  ---- =   1 ---
            6     11      66          11
        -------
           11     6
           --- x --- = 1
            6     11

Fraction Test Correction

In computer terminology, a bit is 1/8 of a byte. How many bits equal 16 bytes?

  16        8         128
  ---   x  ---  =   ------
   1         1           1
------
   1        8
  ---  x  ---         128 bits.
   8        1

 5        1
---  x  ---        What is 1/2 of 5/6?
 6        2
