Questions: 10, 11, 12

*The ones that are in RED are WHOLE NUMBERS
*Reciprocal-  is the fraction that when multiplied creates a product of 1

10.) Divide

a.) 1 1/12 divided by 2 1/2

You need to turn the mixed numbers into an improper fraction. 1 and 1/2 becomes 13/12 and 2 and 1/2 becomes 5/2. Since you have to do the reciprocal on the denominator, you multiply 13/12 by 2/5 on the top (numerator). Then simplify your answer if needed.

b.) 8/11 divided by 4/5

Do the reciprocal on the denominator then after you do that step, you put the reciprocal on the denominator and multipy those. Simplify if it is needed, in this case, I simplified it by 4.

c.) 1 3/8 divided by 2 3/4

Do the reciprocal on the denominator then after you do that step, you put the reciprocal on the denominator and multipy those. Simplify if it is needed, in this case, I simplified it by 11 then 2.

11.) In a comedy review, each performer has a 1/4-h slot. How many performers are there in a 2-h show?

My tip for words problems like this is whatever the second number is, that is what's going to be the denominator. I'm not 100% sure it will work all the time, but this is what I've been using for these kind of word problems.
2 divided by 1/4
How many times does 1/4 go into 2?

*Since 2 is a whole number, make it into a fraction by using 1 as a denominator. So it becomes 2 over 1.

12.) It takes 2 1/2 scoops of flour to make one cake. How many cakes do 15 scoops of flour make?

*My tip for words problems like this is whatever the second number is, that is what's going to be the denominator. I'm not 100% sure it will work all the time, but this is what I've been using for these kind of word problems.

In computer terminology, a bit is 1/8 of a byte. How many bits equal 16 bytes?

16 divided by 1/8

Tamar had 1/2 of an apple pie in her refrigerator. She ate 1/4 of this piece of pie. What fraction of a whole pie did she eat?

1/2 x 1/4 = 1/8

How many groups of 1/4 are in 6?
There are 8 group of 1/4 in 6.

The first thing you do is make the 2 into two over one (2/1). After divide it to 1/4. Make the 1/4 into a reciptical(4/1). Multiply 2/1 to 4/1 so the answer is 8.

13)

How many groups of 3/4 are in 6?
There are 8 groups of 3/4 in 6

The first thing you do is make the 2 into six over one (6/1). After divide it to 1/4. Make the 1/4 into a reciptical(4/3). Multiply 6/1 to 4/3 so the answer is 24/3 then put it into lowest common denominator so the answer is 8

Make sure that if you have a question including a whole number  you write it over 1 in order to be able to multiply and for a mixed number, convert it to a a proper fraction (top heavy fraction).

Nikita`s Fraction Scribepost

Question`s 1,4 and 9 in the textbook.

1) Anna divided 5/6 by 1/2 and stated that the quotient is 5/12.
        a) What was Anna`s mistake?
        b) What is the correct quotient. Use a diagram to show how you know.

 a) She did it wrong because she had multiplied the 5 by the 1 and the 6 by the 2 instead of doing the reciprocals

b) 5 x 2 = 10
     6    1     6
-----------------
    1 x 2
    2    1

  4) a) Does 2 1/2 divided by 1 1/2 equal 1 1/2 divided by 2 1/2?
b) if the quotients an part a) are not equal, how are they related
2 1/2 and 1 1/2 are improper so you have to make them proper fractions.
So 2 1/2 = 5/2 AND 1 1/2 = 3/2
Those are the proper fractions.
so you go 5/2 DIVIDED by 3/2 and you multiply 3/2 by 2/3 because you need to make a reciprocal.
and what you do to that side you also multiply 5/2 x 2/3 = 10/6 OR 1 2/3

           9) Divide.
                 a) 3

# 2. 1/4 + 5/8

2/8 + 5/8 = 7/8

#9. (the first question with the chart.)
5/6 x 1/2 = 5/12
the question for that equation is What is 1/2 of 5/6?
