Textbook 6.2 - 5a, 5d, 9, 12
5a.
Share 3/5 between 2 groups. First thing you do is change the whole number (2) and turn it into an improper fraction (2/1). You try and find the reciprocal which is 1/2 and you multiply it to get 1 whole. Now, what you do to the bottom, you must do to the top. So 3/5 multiply by 1/2 equals 3/10. Now if you divide 3/10 and 1, it would still be 3/10.
5d.
Share 2/3 between 6 groups. First thing you do is change 6 into 6/1 and multiply it by the reciprocal, which is 1/6. The product would then be 6/6 or 1. Now what you do to the bottom, you must do to the top as I said before. So 2/3 multiply by 1/6 equals 2/18 and when you divide 2/18 by 6/6 or 1, I would still have the same answer (2/18).
9. Ingrid runs three laps of a track in 1/4 hour. On average, how much time does she take to run one lap? Express your answer.
a) as a fraction of an hour.
b) in minutes
12. It takes 4/5 of a roll of ribbon to wrap six packages. What fraction of a roll does it take to wrap three packages?
It takes 2/5 of a roll to wrap three packages because it takes 4/5 of roll to wrap six packages. That means it would take half as much rolls to use for three packages because 3 is half of 6.
